The real ESSEX was built in Salem MA in 1799. After completion, she was presented to the United States Navy by the people of Essex County. The only contemporary portrait of the ship is in the Peabody Museum in Salem. At best, all models of the Essex are based on that portrait and the drawings of William Hackett, the designer. As with many other ships, many changes were made over the course of the ship's life, many unrecorded. The model is a plank on frame, open construction type, to show the construction features. As such, only a cursory display of its armament is displayed and only the ship's boats are painted..
