Delta Queen
The Delta Queen is America's steamboat, so authentic she
has been designated a National Historic Landmark, along with Mount Vernon and
the Statute of Liberty, and is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
This American treasure -- the world's only original, fully restored,
steam-powered overnight paddlewheeler -- has endured the strife of World War II
service and hosted a princess and three presidents on her decks.
She has plied America's rivers since 1927.
The hull, first two decks and steam engines were ordered in 1924 from the
William Denny & Brothers shipyard on the River Leven adjoining the River Clyde
at Dumbarton, Scotland. The Queen and her sister boat Delta King were shipped in
pieces to Stockton, California in 1926. There the California Transportation
Company assembled the two vessels for their regular Sacramento River service
between San Francisco and Sacramento, and excursions to Stockton, on the San
Joaquin River. In 1946, Delta Queen was purchased by Greene Line
Steamers of Cincinnati, Ohio and towed via the Panama Canal and the Mississippi
and Ohio Rivers to be refurbished in Pittsburgh. In 1948 she entered regular passenger service,
plying the waters of the Ohio, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Cumberland Rivers
between Cincinnati, New Orleans, St.Paul, Chattanooga, Nashville, and ports in
between.
The model is based on the many photographs available on the internet and is modeled as closely to the original as possible without access to any official plans. The model is constructed of wood, paper, plastic, metal and thread. It weighs in at 4 pounds. The stern paddlewheel (the most difficult part to make) was constructed using a mold so that all 4 sections are identical, thus allowing the 30 paddles to lay in accurately.
The gangway is removable to allow for shipping and if desired, to display the boat without the gangway.
